The game received a 'very good' score of 8.5/10 from Game Informer magazine. There is also a traditional level and experience system in place, but it only increases the character's HP. This allows the player to continually forge inscriptions into a single item, and then, once a more powerful version is found, have it transformed, retaining all inscriptions. Any piece of equipment can be transformed into any other piece of equipment of the same type that the player has picked up. For example, once the hero has unlocked the Strength +5 inscription (by locating the relevant plaque in the game world), he can have it repeatedly forged into his weapon to raise his Strength stat. in real time is, by nature, a more interactive experience than choosing ‘menu’ commands. Battling for hours on end in action-RPGs isn’t as tedious as battling is in most turn-based ones. Inscriptions are the primary means by which the hero improves his statistics and increases his power. It can easily take 60-80 hours to reach the finish line. Through the blacksmithing system, the hero can have weapons, shields, helmets, and armor smelted into mithrill, which can then be used to forge inscriptions into his equipment. Lodoss adheres closely to typical Action RPG gameplay, though with a number of unique gameplay additions. The game follows the adventures of a hero who has been resurrected by the wizard Wart to destroy Cardice (sometimes transliterated as Kardis or Kardiss), the dark goddess of destruction.
